Sea Turtle Nesting Technician
The Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center (SCDNR) is seeking two motivated individuals as paid seasonal field technicians for the 2025 Sea Turtle Project season located at the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center near Georgetown, SC. The beautiful 24,000-acre Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center is secluded (15 miles from nearest town) and accessible by boat only.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct daily beach surveys at sunrise to monitor new turtle nesting activity and hatching emergences on two islands
- Locate egg chamber and mark nests for evaluation
- Determine if required and conduct nest relocation
- Enact nest protective measures against predation
- Document hatchling disorientations and conduct post-emergence nest inventories
- Record all data accurately and completely on field forms and via electronic nest database
- Document and assist with sea turtle strandings
- Responsible for basic ATV and vehicle care (to include daily cleaning and fueling) and maintenance of field supplies
- Work as part of a team to patrol the beach to discourage predation of sea turtle nests
- As time permits, assist educate the public on the importance of beach closures for the protection of nesting sea turtles and shorebirds.
Work Environment:
Work is predominantly conducted outside, seven (7) days per week beginning in the early morning (daily schedule may change with tidal/weather conditions, etc.). All applicants must be accustomed to physically demanding field conditions including extreme heat, humidity, rain, direct sunlight, uneven terrain (sand) and biting insects.
Qualifications:
- Educational background in biology, marine sciences, or ecology is preferred
- Sea turtle nest monitoring and/or surveying experience
- Applicant must be willing to take responsibilities seriously and demonstrate desire to learn
- Ability to work and live in a close team environment
- Strong communication skills
- Competence with data entry, detail-oriented, problem-solving skills
- Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays
- ATV and kayak operation experience are preferred
- Possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Must be a citizen of the United States
The positions are from 27 May to 8 August 2025 with potential to work additional dates outside of this window. The number of hours paid will not exceed 40 hours per week. The seasonal technicians will be paid $12.00 an hour with no benefits. Dormitory style housing is provided on site with bedroom(s), bathroom, kitchen, and common areas. A vehicle is provided for use on the islands, but the applicant must provide their own transportation to the site. Biological Scientist IV
Description of duties:
The Division of Habitat and Species Conservation is comprised of six sections and two offices. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Imperiled Species Management Section’s (ISM) Marine Turtle Management Program! This dynamic role will support the collaborative implementation of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Regionwide Trustee Implementation Group (RW-TIG) Project to Restore and Enhance Sea Turtle Nest Productivity. If you’re passionate about wildlife and habitat conservation, this position offers a unique chance to make a real impact.
Specific responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinates with Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute to review information on sea turtle nesting to identify high density nesting beaches for loggerhead and green sea turtles;
- Visit nesting beaches along the Gulf of Mexico and within the Archie Carr Sea Turtle Refuge on the Atlantic Ocean to identify threats to sea turtles, nests, hatchlings and nesting habitat due to beachfront lighting and other habitat modifications;
- Develops and maintains partnerships with local governments, beachfront communities, and local conservation groups for implementation of project goals;
- Conducts data collection activities (nesting beach threats surveys), data analyses, and interpretation of data to support management and conservation recommendations;
- Develops, manages, and coordinates contracts to implement activities to reduce threats identified on sea turtle nesting beaches.
- Contributes to preparation and timely submittal of reports and may present results through internal and external (peer-reviewed publications, professional and public meeting, etc.) outlets as directed by supervisor;
- Assists with the creation, maintenance and quality control of shapefiles, layers and geodatabases, develops maps and data summaries using ArcGIS, GoogleEarth, MS Access and MS Excel for management purposes;
- Participates in stranding response, necropsies, and other miscellaneous field work assignments as needed;
- Aids with developing and/or coordinating responses to public inquiries received via AskMyFWC, public records requests, or other assignments as needed;
- Attends internal and external meetings, workshops, and presentations as necessary;
- Maintains all assigned equipment in safe working condition; and
- Performs other project-related duties and administrative tasks as directed.
Salary: $23.14 per hour. This is expected to be a five-year grant funded position.

Level of Education & Experience: Prefer a bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife, or fisheries management; zoology; environmental sciences or other closely related curriculum and two years of professional experience; or prefer a graduate degree and one year of professional experience. Candidates with previous experience with wildlife management or research programs will be given preference; Qualified applicants should have a background in one of the following: aquatic resource management, aquatic habitat restoration or imperiled species management; and will need to be highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and adept at problem-solving and time management to succeed in this position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- This position requires administrative, communication, and computer skills, and the review, evaluation, interpretation, and presentation of biological data.
- Proficiency in MS software applications: Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required, and Google Earth Pro, ArcGIS 10.5+, ArcGIS Pro, or ArcGIS Online, SharePoint preferred;
- Knowledge of wildlife conservation, management techniques, and ecology;
- Knowledge of terminology, scientific method, principles, and techniques used in biological research, analyses or assessment;
- Knowledge of freshwater, marine and/or estuarine ecosystems;
- Ability to perform quantitative analyses of scientific data;
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work assignments to meet deadlines;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and technical report writing;

OPS Employment Description: This is a full-time OPS (Other Personnel Services) position. OPS employees are paid for the number of hours they work. In this 9-month full-time seasonal position, you'll play a crucial role in providing exceptional visitor services, all while sharing your enthusiasm for KDFWR's vital role in the management and conservation of fish and wildlife.
Responsibilities:
- Assist at a busy information desk, offering support and information to visitors.
- Operate a point-of-sale system for admissions, memberships, licenses, and merchandise.
- Handle cash transactions, manage cash drawers, and prepare daily cash transmittals and receipts.
- Answer and direct telephone and email inquiries with professionalism and accuracy.
- Assist with field trip bookings and rentals.
- Conduct general maintenance of exhibits, grounds, and hiking trails using basic tools.
- Perform some outdoor work, ensuring the overall upkeep of the facility.
Qualifications:
- Work 37.50 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from March through November.
- Comfortable handling cash transactions and communicating with the public in person, over the phone, and in writing.
- Proficient in computer usage and familiar with basic office tools and small hand tools (e.g., leaf blowers, weed eaters, shovels, etc.).
- Ability to perform tasks in both indoor and outdoor settings, including running, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting heavy objects.
- Obtain certification in CPR/First Aid and be prepared to respond to emergencies.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.

Biological Science Technician
Summary: This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a technical assistant to professional research scientists in the field and/or at a nursery, arboretum, greenhouse, or laboratory.
Duties:
- Sets up laboratory equipment for making a variety of scientific measurements and observations of sample materials gathered from experimental field plots.
- Performs technical assignments involving techniques and practices used in the operation and maintenance of controlled environment greenhouses and growth chambers for seedling production.
- Tasks would include growing tree seedlings and other plants in containers in greenhouses and outdoors, preparation of seed, and media, planting seed, fertilizing, irrigating, controlling insects and diseases.
- Tasks would include maintaining proper environmental conditions in the greenhouse and maintaining accurate records for chemical applications, cultural treatments and seedling inventories.
- Locates study areas and study plots by driving on unimproved roads, interpreting maps and aerial photos, determining scale of aerial photos, running compass lines.
- Locates study areas and study plots by using laser hypsometers in accordance to the requirements of a study plan or instructions of supervisor.
- Assists in setting up equipment for performing field tests and studies (e.g., phenological assessments, vegetation surveys, effects of climate change and silvicultural treatments etc.).
- Observes, measures, and records a variety of scientific phenomena that affect forest, range, or watershed conditions.
- Gathers data on such things as phenology, temperature, humidity, soil characteristics, precipitation, growth and mortality, cover types, species identification, diameters, height and age of trees.
- Gathers data on such things as shrub and ground cover vegetation characteristics, and amount and type of recreational use.
- Programs, downloads and maintains scientific or precision instruments, environmental monitoring sensors, germinators, growth chambers, weather stations , and other apparatus as required.
- Collects biological and vegetation specimens and samples and prepares them for analysis.
- Is responsible for the accumulation, coding, transcription and processing of information; edits and corrects records; and provides quality control of automatic data processing entries.
- Summarizes results and prepares graphs and charts using standard statistical methods according to instructions.
- Oversees one or two employees in performing one or more of these duties.
